Oil pastel on paper, 2023

During a walk in Nisene Marks State Park I came across an arrangement of redwoods that stoped me in my tracks. A fairy ring of adolescent trees stood around a sun-drenched apse where a fallen trunk low to the ground, but suspended on unseen supports, made a glowing table. The title of the piece came to me in an instant. But it took years to capture the image: the electric feeling of the forest, the charged quiet, the devotional light.

The Process of Remembering

…how it feels to jump, toss, reach, prance. That’s what I was channeling when I made this work. I began with a screenshot of myself dancing alone in the living room (an early pandemic survival tactic), and played with color, texture, gesture, and emotion. This body had been a dancer, once. While drawing this expressive figure, I knew it would always be dancing.
