Sometimes I wish I, too, had scales, and a lightning tongue, and kaleidoscopic skin. In quiet moments, I have asked Western Fence Lizard to teach me how to wear these things. In this piece, they did.

The Process of Conjuring

These works begin by creating the watercolor backgrounds in a random, experimental state of play. I splash clear water onto the paper and then dip and drizzle paint into the already-morphing pools. These swaths of turbulence and sediment are the perfect backdrop to my next layer: a meditative and meticulous field of tiny, saturated marks. I build up the image with felt tip and fine-line markers and the figures fade into sight, emerging from the cool morning fog of paper white.
