Self Portrait as Western Fence Lizard #2

$350.00

Fine liner marker and watercolor on paper, 2024

When I spend time basking on the garden wall next to Western Fence Lizard, one of my beloved neighbors, I wonder what their eyes are seeing. In this piece, I try them on. I see air temperatures more clearly, and dust motes. I warm the space before me with my stare.

The Process of Refining

These works begin by creating the watercolor backgrounds in a random, experimental state of play. I splash clear water onto the paper and then dip and drizzle paint into the already morphing pools. These swaths of turbulence and sediment are the perfect backdrop to my next layer: a meditative and meticulous field of tiny, saturated marks. I build up the portrait with felt tip and fine line markers to reveal this face’s particular personality.
