Mixed media artwork in color pencil and watercolor, 2023

I began this series at the beginning of a debilitating post-covid fatigue illness which drained my energy to the extent that I could not walk more than a few yards before needing to sleep. Instead, I sat in a chair and drew, and that’s how movement came back to me. In these images I am offering gratitude for where I’ve been, mourning for where I am, and energized hope for the places I may yet go.

The Process of Remembering

…how it feels to jump, toss, reach, prance. That’s what I was channeling when I made this work. I began with a screenshot of myself dancing alone in the living room (an early pandemic survival tactic), and played with color, texture, gesture, and emotion. This body had been a dancer, once. While drawing this expressive figure, I knew it would always be dancing.
