Sometimes I wish I, too, had scales, and a lightning tongue, and kaleidoscopic skin. In quiet moments, I have asked Western Fence Lizard to teach me these things. In this piece, they did.

The Process of Conjuring

These works begin by creating the watercolor backgrounds in a random, experimental state of play. I splash clear water onto the paper and then dip and drizzle paint into the already-morphing pools. These swaths of turbulence and sediment are the perfect backdrop to my next layer: a meditative and meticulous field of tiny, saturated marks. I build up the image with felt tip and fine-line markers and the figures fade into sight, emerging from the cool morning fog of paper white.
