Self Portrait as Great Horned Owl #1

$750.00

Fine line marker and watercolor on paper, 2022

The first of my animism series and the most personal of my pleas to join the more-than-human world around me. This series explores the fact that there is no meaningful boundary between “nature” and our human-constructed ideas of society. We are all kin. That is not a metaphor. When I moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains in 2022, I could hear the Great Horned Owls sing their duets each night outside our window. Each day, in my studio, I did my best to sing back.

This original framed mixed media artwork features celestial watercolor drips underneath intricate fine-line marker ink on paper. The artwork is presented in a high quality custom walnut frame with double mat which is reflected in the price.

The Process of Communing

I was bewitched by the eyes. How can one not be? Their incandescent yellow is unmissable. But how would I keep that light glowing while drawing close its feather mantle? I focused on the texture of each plume, with details as gestures, keeping the spaces open between them to allow the question of our faces to merge. Our owlness grew cloud-solid, and dawn-sharp tiny pen flick after tiny flick.
