Once I had met Great Horned Owl’s eyes, it was time to fly. In this piece, I play with the tension between the raptor’s fierceness and silence. Isn’t it remarkable how death, and life, can come so quietly? I burst our forms a bit, tossing pen dashes all the way to the frame’s edge, matching the speed and ferocity of the swoop.

The watercolor backgrounds in these works come first, before I even know what shapes will be merging into the main character. In this piece I knew I was going to play with tumult and fling. When our outstretched hand-talons lined up perfectly with that mid-day splash, I knew the artwork’s soul was present.
